H2O – Nemo’s

To produce a 1-liter plastic bottle of water consumes 4 liters, a 33 cl can of Coke requires 200 liters, and a glass of beer requires 300 liters. While in the world there are people dying from the consequences of drought, 250 million liters of water are used every year in Italy to keep an amusement park like Gardaland running. These and many other figures, which well quantify the waste done daily by our civilized society, are the subject of Nemo's new book, which opens with a familiar character intent on sucking on a straw. We have already seen him watching us from the walls that line the streets of our cities and got to know him better in the volume Who is Nemo's, published by #logoseditions in 2016. He is the embodiment of contemporary man. The straw, in this book that runs horizontally in fifteen plates to be placed side by side, crawls to the ground and becomes a two-tone pipe that extends like a thread to stitch virtually all the pages together. Through the straw man draws water from the planet, while pipes proliferate to form an intricate thicket. They are the hoses of a gasoline pump, of a coffee machine, the pipes connected to watering cans that weigh on the back while working in the fields. They do not leave the man even when he is doing his business and continue to snake around him as he cleans the floor or sits in the bathtub. These are all everyday situations in which the pipes that surround us and usually remain hidden come to light revealing how we actually use our most precious resource.

Mentre nel mondo ci sono persone che muoiono per le conseguenze della siccità, ogni anno in Italia si utilizzano 250 milioni di litri d’acqua per mantenere in funzione un parco divertimenti come Gardaland. Questi e molti altri dati, che ben quantificano gli sprechi compiuti quotidianamente dalla nostra società civilizzata, sono l’argomento del nuovo libro di Nemo’s, che si apre con un personaggio familiare intento a succhiare una cannuccia. Lo abbiamo già visto guardarci dai muri che fiancheggiano le strade delle nostre città e lo abbiamo conosciuto meglio nel volume Who is Nemo’s, pubblicato da #logosedizioni nel 2016. È l’incarnazione dell’uomo contemporaneo. La cannuccia, in questo libro che si snoda in orizzontale, in quindici tavole da affiancare una all’altra, striscia a terra e si trasforma in un tubo bicolore che si prolunga come un filo a cucire virtualmente tutte le pagine. Attraverso la cannuccia l’uomo attinge acqua dal pianeta, mentre le tubature proliferano fino a formare una selva intricata. Sono i tubi di una pompa di benzina, di una macchinetta del caffè, i tubi collegati agli annaffiatoi che gravano sulla schiena durante il lavoro nei campi. Non abbandonano l’uomo nemmeno quando fa i suoi bisogni e continuano a serpeggiargli intorno mentre pulisce il pavimento o siede nella vasca da bagno. Tutte situazioni quotidiane, in cui le tubature che ci circondano e solitamente rimangono nascoste vengono alla luce svelandoci come effettivamente utilizziamo la nostra risorsa più preziosa.
